John Terrence Lynch (born September 25, 1971 in Hinsdale, Illinois) is an American football safety for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League. He was originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the third round (82nd overall) of the 1993 NFL Draft. He played college football at Stanford.

Lynch is a nine-time Pro Bowl selection and earned a Super Bowl ring with the Buccaneers in 2003 in their victory over the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII.

Professional career

Lynch was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the third round (82nd pick overall) of the 1993 NFL Draft. Lynch played his first 11 seasons in the league with the Buccanneers. Lynch signed a free agent contract to join the Broncos prior to the 2004 season after being released by the Buccaneers due to salary cap concerns.

Lynch is known throughout the NFL as a ferocious hitter, often punishing wide receivers who cross the middle of the field trying to catch footballs. He once knocked out his brother-in-law, John Allred, at the time playing tight end for the Chicago Bears, with a helmet-to-helmet hit.[citation needed]

Lynch has developed the role of the free safety into one that plays run support extremely well. He remains a vocal leader on the football field.

In 2002, Lynch collected a Super Bowl ring in Super Bowl XXXVII with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in San Diego, California. He was the first player to wear a microphone in the Super Bowl.

After the 2007 season had ended, Lynch retired, but later took a pay cut to remain with the team for a 6th season.

Lynch has been selected to 9 Pro Bowls, 5 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and 4 with the Denver Bronocs

In 1992, Lynch, who was a two sport star in both baseball and football at Stanford, threw the first pitch ever for the Florida Marlins organization, for a minor league affiliate of the Marlins. His jersey is in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Lynch attended Torrey Pines High School where he also played quarterback. His father John Lynch, Sr. owns San Diego's Broadcast Company of the Americas, parent company to major sports radio station, XX Sports Radio. Their morning hosts include former Charger great, Billy Ray Smith.

Lynch is the godfather of Marcus Edwards, son of Kansas City Chiefs head coach Herman Edwards.
