Dent County is a county located in the U.S. state of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 14,927. Its county seat is Salem[1]. The county was organized in 1851 and is named after settler James Dent, who came from Virginia in 1835.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 755 square miles (1,954 km²), of which, 754 square miles (1,952 km²) of it is land and 1 square miles (3 km²) of it (0.13%) is water.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 14,927 people, 5,982 households, and 4,277 families residing in the county. The population density was 20 people per square mile (8/km²). There were 6,994 housing units at an average density of 9 per square mile (4/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 97.07% White, 0.40% Black or African American, 0.73% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 1.41% from two or more races. 0.75% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 5,982 households out of which 30.60% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.00% were married couples living together, 9.10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.50% were non-families. 25.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.10% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.90.

In the county the population was spread out with 24.90% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 25.60% from 25 to 44, 24.10% from 45 to 64, and 17.70% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 94.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $27,193, and the median income for a family was $33,061. Males had a median income of $26,590 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the county was $14,463. About 12.70% of families and 17.20% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.30% of those under age 18 and 12.20% of those age 65 or over.
